The future of Nines rugby league in Rockhampton is secure with this week Schwarz Excavations committing to major sponsorship of the 9-a-side preseason competition for the next three years.
2017 Schwarz Excavations Nines Organiser Walson Carlos said it was a great boost ahead of this year’s competition which is set to see significant growth this year.
“It’s our third year with the Nines format and it is a really exciting format that gives clubs in the region and beyond a great avenue for a pre-season hit-out. I really commend Jeffrey Schwarz for getting behind this event. Schwarz Excavations has been a bigtime supporter of rugby league in the CQ region for many years and this is just another example of it. The Schwarz Excavations Nines has massive growth potential into the future and these type of events have such a positive impact on not only the local sporting community but the wider economy.” Carlos said.
The Schwarz Excavation Nines will hold an Open Men’s 1st Division and 2nd Division competition, U/20s Men’s competition and a Women’s competition over the two days with total prizemoney set to exceed $10,000.
In the Open Men’s two-time defending Nines Champions Yeppoon Seagulls will attempt to defend their title for a second time after taking out the Inaugural Nines competition in 2015 and backing it up in 2016. Strong challengers for the title are expected to come from RRL reigning premiers Norths Chargers, the rejuvenated Woorabinda Warriors, Blackwater Crushers and the reigning Mackay Rugby League Champions Mackay Magpies.
“It’s set to be a cracking two days of fast and furious rugby league with all the fun and excitement of the Nines. The Rockhampton Leagues Club Bonus Zone tries are back again which will see teams receive 5-point tries for scoring in the marked area between the posts. We still have spots for teams in all our competitions but time is running out. I would love to see some representation from Gladstone whether it be a club team or a rep team in the u/20s, Men’s or women’s. It would just be great to have our harbour city neighbours involved, but we welcome nominations from anywhere really.” Carlos said.
Any teams that wish to nominate can contact Walson Carlos on 0419 429 675 or email@example.com
